Old Massim Kula canoe Splash Board
This old Kula splash board was collected in 1965 by Assistant District Oficer John Quinn on Kwaiawata Island In the Marshall Bennet Group of the Losuia Sub District, Milne Bay District, Papua New Guinea. Its seemingly asymmetrical design visually is balanced against the outrigger of the canoe giving an aesthectic logic to the design.
The splash board is bleached from extensive sea use. It has the classic interlockinh scroll design terminating in bird and sanke heads. There is a row of sandpipers marching across the ridge of the splash board.
