Central Australian Aboriginal Ceremonial Aboriginal Shield

The painted iconography on this shield is probably more familiar to people as images on canvas, the first of which was painted in 1971. These contemporary paintings however took their inspiration from traditional designs such as found on this bean wood shield. Shields like this bean wood shield originate in Central Australia and when decorated played an important part in many desert rituals. Over the past one hundred years they have been traditional traded west amongst Aboriginal groups. Examples can be found in many Western Australian communities. This shield was collected in Central Australia in the late 60s. It possess and beautiful loose style whilst maintaining a wonderful balanced design.
